With the current tight labor market, it is more important than ever to attract and retain talent. There are currently three generations in the workplace: generation X (1965 – 1980), millennials (1981 – 1996) and generation Z (1997 – 2012). Each generation has its own preferences and expectations. But how do you create a working atmosphere that is attractive to different age groups?
A modern workplace connects generations
“Many of our young employees work in the office, instead of at home. It is easier to make contact with each other and the surrounding area here. There is always activity on the Zuidas.”
Merel Oosterveld Facility & Office Coordination Manager at MichaelPage
Millennials have experienced the transition to flexible working. Yet they prefer face-to-face communication with colleagues. Because although they recognize the benefits of working from home, they see the office as an important place for creativity and team dynamics. For millennials, creating an atmosphere in the office is very important; it not only helps them to be productive, but also to build strong relationships with their colleagues.
Generation X comes to the office with a pragmatic attitude and professional interaction. This generation, which has experienced the transition from analogue to digital, sees the office as a place for efficient collaboration and knowledge exchange. They appreciate flexible working, but often attach more value to the structure and routine that an office environment offers. For this generation, the atmosphere in the office is important, but with an emphasis on productivity and goal-orientedness.
