The World Trade Center Amsterdam (WTC) opened its doors almost 40 years ago and has become a household name. The building – known as ‘The place to connect’ – has since grown into the largest office building in the Netherlands. The nine-tower complex offers more than 156,000 m² of office space. Located in the bustling Zuidas in Amsterdam, WTC Amsterdam has a rich history.
From pioneer to icon: the history of WTC Amsterdam
How it all started
WTC Amsterdam opened in 1985 and was initially an office complex of four office towers (A, B, C and D) between Zuidplein and Beethovenstraat. WTC Amsterdam was therefore part of the then emerging Zuidas; an (inter)national top location for companies. From 1997, the Dutch Office Fund of CBRE Investment Management took over management and successfully expanded the complex. This marked the transformation of WTC Amsterdam into a leading office complex: a household name in the Amsterdam business world.
Development, growth and innovation
Much has been changed and improved, especially in the last twenty years. In 2002, WTC Amsterdam underwent a major renovation. The existing towers were renovated and the complex was expanded with five new towers: E, F, G, H, and I. A number of these can be found on the other side of Zuidplein. This square was also completely modernized in 2004, which improved its accessibility and aesthetics.
In 2018, Tower D – which was renamed Tower Ten – received a thorough renovation. With the addition of HOFF in Tower Ten, a new milestone was reached: the first 5 star office in Europe. In 2023, all towers were given new names, from Tower One to Ten. The ambition to continue to innovate, with a focus on sustainability, remains undiminished.
Sustainability
A healthy and sustainable working environment is paramount. The ambitious goals are supported and recognized with a BREEAM In-Use Very Good and Well Gold certification. In recent years, sustainability has been achieved in more than 50 areas. Think of LED lighting, a gas-free building, reducing CO2 emissions and efficient waste processing to reduce the ecological footprint. Sustainability will continue to be high on the agenda in the future to meet the growing demands in the field of environment, social affairs and governance (ESG).
